Establish a Routine
Establishing a regular brushing routine is the best way to ensure good oral hygiene. Make sure your kids brush twice daily—once in the morning and once before bedtime—for two minutes each time. If needed, use timers or “brush-along” songs to make brushing fun!
Use Fluoride Toothpaste
Fluoride helps strengthen enamel and protects against tooth decay; it is especially beneficial for young mouths with developing teeth since it can be harder for them to resist bacteria buildup due to a lack of experience with proper brushing techniques. Not to mention dietary choices that lead to more plaque build-up around the gum line than adults might experience. Show Them How To Floss
Flossing removes plaque, which helps prevent cavities from forming between teeth. Show your child how to floss correctly, ensuring they go under the gumline but do not press too hard against the gums. Flossing should be done at least once a day, preferably after dinner when food particles are still stuck between teeth.
Encourage a Healthy Diet
What kids eat has an effect on their oral health as well as their overall health and well-being. Foods high in sugar can damage teeth if eaten too often, so try to limit sugary snacks and drinks like candy and soda (or switch those out for healthier alternatives). Also, encourage your kids to drink plenty of water throughout the day; this will help rinse away food particles that get stuck between teeth after meals or snacks.
Schedule Regular Dental Visits
Taking your kids for regular dental checkups is key in helping detect any potential problems early on before they become bigger issues down the road (such as cavities).
