Don’t you just love bagels? Bagels with everything spice are the best. Growing up in Montreal, bagels were a staple of our weekend breakfast treat. Poppyseed bagels, sesame seed bagels, cinnamon raisin bagels and everything spice in that salty doughy thick Montreal bagel served warm popped right from the wood-fired oven on the large wooden boards. My ideal combination was the everything spice bagel and smoked salmon with cream cheese smattered on the bagel with a dark cup of coffee and the newspaper for a perfect Saturday morning at the market.
Flash forward, 20 years and 3 kids later living on the west coast with nary a bagel in site and the low-carb, gluten-free craze makes the beloved bagel a distant memory. Until this weekend when I was craving a little something extra for my avocado toast.
Low and behold, the everything bagel spice with super-seeds was born, inspired by twopeasandapod.com Easy to make and store, you can spread this sh$t on everything!
- 1 Tablespoon dried minced garlic
- 1 Tablespoon dried minced onion
- 2 Tablespoons poppy seeds
- 1 Tablespoon white sesame seeds
- 1 Tablespoon black sesame seeds
- 1 1/2 Teaspoons Himalayan pink salt, flaked sea salt or Kosher salt
- 2 Tablespoons chia seeds
- 2 Tablespoons hemp seeds
In a small bowl, combine the dried garlic and minced onion, crush with a mortar to break up the chunks. Add the poppy seeds, sesame seeds, salt, chia seeds, and hemp seeds. Stir until well combined. Store in a sealed jar or container.
I had mine on avocado toast but you can put this on everything like potatoes, roasted vegetables, stir-fry zucchini noodles, eggs, hummus, garden tomatoes, salads, and buddha bowls. Just leave it on the counter and you might just put it on everything. I don’t even miss the bagels anymore 🙂
